Welcome to King James IV
At King James IV (KJIV), our mission is to offer a unique blend of traditional and contemporary golf apparel and accessories. We strive to create some of the most stylish and vibrant products in the world of golf. By joining our kingdom, you’ll not only experience the roots of the game but also be a part of our passionate and dedicated community.
Our passion for golf led us on a journey to discover the origins of this beloved sport, ultimately leading us to King James IV of Scotland. This legendary King, often referred to as “the royal golfer,” played a significant role in the history of golf. During his reign, golf faced an interesting turn of events. His predecessor, King James II, had actually banned the sport, as men prioritised it over their duties to the King.
King James IV reinstated the sport during his reign in the early 16th Century. This renewed royal interest and participation in golf contributed to the game’s survival and growth in popularity over the following centuries.
It’s a story that resonates even today, as we all sometimes crave a break from work to play a cheeky round of golf or a quick 9 holes.
Explore the KJIV collection, where golf and style converge; offering a firsthand look at the evolution of this incredible sport. Based in the picturesque green hills of northern New South Wales, Australia, our brand invites you to reconnect with the roots of the game and experience the timeless allure of golf.

Our Founder Matthew Brown
Hi, I’m Matthew — founder of King James IV.
I’ve been playing golf since I was 13, on and off, and to date, my best handicap is 14.6. Golf has always been a passion of mine, but it’s just one of many things that motivate me. I’m in my 40s, with a family, and I’m working hard to grow a small idea into something bigger — all while chasing my dreams and learning along the way.
Like my son, I’ve lived with dyslexia my whole life. English and I have had a bit of a “love-hate” relationship, and you’ll probably notice the odd grammar or spelling mistake in my posts or on this site. I apologise in advance! But hey, that’s all part of the journey, right? A huge thanks to my amazing wife for all her help proofreading. I couldn’t have done it without you! We’ve been together for almost 20 years, and I’m incredibly grateful for her support and partnership.
Living with dyslexia means thinking outside the box comes naturally. We might not always fit the traditional mould, but that’s where we find our creative solutions and strengths.
For 20 years, I worked as a chef, honing my skills in a variety of kitchens, from fine dining establishments to high-pressure environments. During that time, I had the privilege of working alongside celebrity chefs and preparing meals for politicians and some of Australia’s wealthiest individuals. I met many incredible people, made lasting friendships, and gained invaluable experiences. But despite the excitement and prestige, the long hours and the strain it placed on my family life eventually led me to reassess my priorities.
When COVID hit, we were living in Western Australia, while our extended family was across the country in New South Wales. The uncertainty of the pandemic made us rethink things, and we decided to move back closer to family. It was then I made the decision to reinvent myself.
I enrolled in an IT course — something I never thought I’d do — and over the next four years, I transitioned out of the kitchen. Along the way, I also started a business mentoring course and launched King James IV. It’s been a challenging and rewarding journey, and I’m excited to see where it takes me.
Thanks for taking the time to read a little about me. I’m looking forward to sharing this adventure with you!
